SABIC’s “Safer Chemistry Programme” has been created in 2020 to reduce and manage the use of chemicals of concern in production processes.
The programme entails pro-active internal assessments of the portfolio, in which more than 1,800 substances were analysed, from which about 350 were identified as meeting SABIC’s “chemicals of concern” definition. These substances were afterwards ranked using an internal prioritisation tool. The current outcome is that 50 chemicals of concern were identified based on priority scores and were subsequently further assessed on opportunities to substitute, eliminate or reduce these chemicals of concern in the SABIC portfolio.
