Plastics Europe supports the objectives of the UN and national governments to end plastic pollution by 2040. We believe that the zero draft misses the opportunity to foster a Circular Economy.
The listed options heavily emphasize the reduction of primary plastics production, while the circular economy approach takes a backseat. We call for an international agreement that incorporates the following 3 essential principles: plastic circularity, an application-based approach, and robust monitoring and governance mechanisms. Our vision aligns with the UNEP report’s recommendations for a systematic shift towards reusing, recycling, and diversifying plastic use while also addressing pollution issues.
