Het Europees Parlement en de Europese Raad hebben op 4 maart een voorlopig akkoord bereikt over nieuwe regels om verpakkingen te verduurzamen. De Verpakkingenverordening (PPWR) is een omvangrijk pakket wetgeving met het doel de hoeveelheid verpakkingsafval de verminderen en een circulaire economie te stimuleren. Met de PPWR zijn daarmee bindende regels in aantocht voor preventie, hergebruik en recycling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoewel de voorlopige overeenkomst welkome stappen voorwaarts zet op het gebied van gerecyclede inhoud en recyclebaarheid, betreuren we het ontbreken van een materiaal-neutrale en wetenschappelijk onderbouwde benadering bij het opleggen van beperkingen en het stellen van doelen voor hergebruik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We zien dat het voor sommige beleidsmakers politiek aantrekkelijk is om het uitbannen van bepaalde verpakkingsoplossingen als duurzame optie te presenteren. Helaas leidt zo’n aanpak eerder tot meer impact op het klimaat in plaats van minder.\u00a0En daarmee helpt het de transitie naar netto nul en circulair plastic niet vooruit, waarvoor Europese plastic verpakkingsfabrikanten miljarden aan extra investeringen willen doen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
