Plastics Europe publiceert vandaag haar tweejaarlijkse rapport \u2018The Circular Economy for Plastics: A European Analysis\u2019<\/a>. Het rapport analyseert de meest recente (2024) data en gegevens over de transitie naar een circulaire plasticeconomie in Europa, waaronder trends in de productie, verwerking, consumptie en handel van circulair plastic en in afvalverwerking. De belangrijkste conclusie van het rapport is dat de Europese transitie ingrijpend is vertraagd onder toenemende druk van mondiale concurrentie. De jaarlijkse Europese groei van de productie van circulair plastic liep terug van 13,6% in 2022 tot slechts 1,2% in 2024. In totaal werd 8.7 miljoen ton aan mechanisch en chemisch gerecycled en biobased plastic geproduceerd; 15,8% van de totale productie. Mondiaal versnelde de groei in de productie van circulair plastic van 5% naar 7,7%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Nederland liep de totale plasticproductie in twee jaar met 14.4% terug, waardoor ook het volume aan circulaire plasticproductie daalde.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ook de groei van de Europese verwerking van gerecycled plastic loopt terug. De jaarlijkse groei, 16,2% in 2022, viel terug naar 4% in 2024. In Nederland steeg de vraag van verwerkers nog wel (van 12,8% van 14,3%), maar zette de trend van dalende capaciteit zich voort (-2.9%, na een daling van 5% die in 2022 werd gerapporteerd).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nieuwe data over de handel in plastic tonen hoezeer de transitie naar circulair plastic afhankelijk is van externe waardeketens: 19% van de vraag van verwerkers wordt ingevuld door import en 12,4% van het Europees ingezameld plastic afval wordt in andere regio\u2019s gerecycled. De afhankelijkheid van invoer is nog groter voor fossiele gebaseerd plastic: 25 % van de vraag van verwerkers wordt hier afgedekt door import.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europa heeft nog steeds het grootste aandeel circulair plastic (15,8%) ten opzichte de totale productiemix. Die koppositie dankt het vooral aan de scherpe daling in de productie van plastic uit fossiele grondstoffen. Tussen 2022 en 2024 daalde die met 8,3% tot 43,3 miljoen ton. In Nederland daalde de productie het sterkst, met 14.4% tot 5,3 miljoen ton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
