Basisprocessen in de chemie onttrekken de koolstof aan nu nog overwegend fossiele brandstoffen als olie en gas. Door deze chemische bouwblokken, de monomeren, in ketens aan elkaar te rijgen, krijg je polymeren. Ofwel plastics.  Om de productie van plastic los te koppelen van fossiel, moeten we dus op zoek naar alternatieve koolstofbronnen in de chemie.
